An employer has responsibility to ensure an employee has a safe work environment and to make appropriate adjustments to ensure the employee is able to conduct their work safely. As I'm always saying, "your mental health is AS important as your physical health" so it seems reasonable for an employer to promote a mentally healthy work environment. In fact there is growing research to support the notion that happy workers are more productive. So wouldn't it be great if all employers supported their employees in their mental well-being? A growing number of employers are beginning to consider this but there does still remain a lot of misunderstanding about mental health and employees often don't feel able to address work related concerns, stress levels, work load and working practices with their employer for fear of negative fallout. My own many observations in occupational settings have seen examples of lack of understanding and stigma related to mental health damaging moral, reducing effectiveness and losing employees (either through sickness or resignation). I would add that I have also seen some very supportive, healthy and productive working environments!
IMPORTANT NOTE: Employers ALSO need to take care of their own mental well-being!!
